Sitemap Addon

Setting up a new website is always a challenge. A huge number of issues and tasks need to be taken into account. Proper promotion of the website among the search engines is one of these tasks, and the first step should be to generate a sitemap of the newly created website.

There are a number of free services that can do this job for the website owner. However, the results are outside owner’s control, and there is no guarantee that the entire website can be crawled properly as a result.

We have introduced a new addon to simplify the process of sitemap generation for Worksforweb product owners.

However, before we discuss how it works, let us take one step back and look at what sitemaps are, and why we need them for website promotion.

An Overview

A typical sitemap used for promoting website content among various search engines is a specially formatted XML file. It contains links to all website pages that browsers can crawl, as well as certain additional information about each page.

Sitemaps have to be refreshed regularly, ideally, whenever any time a new page appears on the website. For a classifieds website with a number of listings, each new listing generates at least one new page, which ideally has to be fed to search engine crawlers for indexing.

However, it does not necessarily mean that when an admin adds new content and appends the sitemap file with the new page URL, all search engine robots immediately rush to this website. The frequency of update, which is one of the parameters for every page, is for indicative purposes, and it does not affect the true frequency of website page indexing by crawlers.

How to Generate Your Sitemap

Once the Sitemap Addon is installed, a new column appears on the “Site Pages” page. This column contains checkboxes that allow the admin to select the pages for inclusion into the sitemap.

Select some or all pages to include them into the sitemap.

In the System Configuration -> System Settings -> Sitemap, the admin can set the desired frequency of search crawler visits.

This addon is not included in the default WorksForWeb classified software package. Feel free to download this addon for all our products. This addon is available for all our products v.6.1.1 and above.

We do not guarantee that the addon will work with websites that have code/template modifications made by yourself, us, or any third party due to possible compatibility issues.
